Katya, the favorite of Tsar Alexander II.

Love, love madly,

love as much as you can and if they tell you it's a sin,

love your sin and you'll be innocent.

William Shakespeare, Romeo & Juliet

Ekaterina Mikhailovna Dolgorukova - Katya - photographed at a young age.

Katya was little more than a girl, to be more precise she was thirteen when she first met Tsar Alexander II who,  at the time, was forty-two.
The occasion was given to her by a visit of Her Majesty to the Tieplowka Castle in which she lived with her parents, Prince and Princess Dolgoruki, and her brothers, Maria, Mikhail, Nikita, Kole, Alexis, in August  1857: since all them in those days suffered a severe influenza attack that forced them into their couches, all the responsibility for the home honor was to the little girl who had nothing to think about than riding around the park of the castle with her beloved horse, Goli, indeed, she had already made such a damage destroying the whole flower bed under the entrance balustrade prepared by planting 5000 pots of begonia and calendula to welcome the Emperor of all Russias.
When He arrived at the castle one hour in advance, He was received at the gate by the servitude and He and His men entered, but the castle appeared to His eyes completely desert ...
Virtually the members of the whole family ( which boasted ancient, very famous roots, given it descended directly from Grand Rurik, Duke of Lithuania, of Norman origin, founder of the Imperial Russia ) were sick in their own beds, only Katya had not been infected.
As He was reaching the first floor, looking for someone to talk with, the Tzar was reached by a small, slender, minute figure who entered the hall of the castle horse-riding, who, with shrewdness, asked who He was and, once she understood that she was talking to the emperor, she asked why He might dare to come with an hour in advance: He felt completely disarmed and could not hold on a loud laugh, that girl, so spontaneous, her irreverent imprudence that prompted her to turn to Him as a common person, her disruptive joy of living, proper to her youth, which emanated as light from her gaze, had inevitably conquered His heart.

That evening they dined side by side and it remained for both of them as a sweet reminder that began to tie them to one another.

Three years passed before the Tsar met her again; the opportunity this time was offered to Him by the visit that He paid annually to Smolny College, reserved to girls belonging to the Russian aristocracy, visit that he did shortly before Christmas to give the students the Empress' gifts.

Katya was sixteen, she was a little girl now, but she had not changed so much that's why He recognized her immediately and, interrupting His business with the other girls and the directress of the institute, He took her with Him on His sleight to carry her out on a very long a trip on the snow together which marked the fate of them both: the Tsar not only felt that He was became her friend, He felt for her a sense of protection since during the years separating their encounters she had lost both her parents and the castle of Tieplowka was razed to the ground by a terrible fire.
The Dolgoruki family had lost all its possessions and the poor children were all orphans.
Katya and her brothers needed His help, He felt He had to take care of them ... but Katya, Katya was for Him like a star shining in the firmament more than anyone else ever seen before she knew her.

The following year, He sent her His invitation to the ball court, one year ahead of what was used at the time (usually the debut in the society took place at the age of eighteen), and when that evening He saw her approcing Him, dressed in a blue dress that emphasized her still innocent look, wearing the turquoise garter that He had given her as a gift along with the letter of invitation, and kissing the hand of the Empress who was next to Him, He, and with him all the people present, realized that she had inevitably taken the Empress' place into His heart.

Tsar Alexander II at the time of His falling in love.

During the first dance, it inevitably smacked that spark that will make them both slaves of a strong, passionate feeling that will join them for the rest of their lives.
At that time the Tsarina was already suffering a form of consumption that progressively weakened her despite her frequent and long stays on the sea of Sanremo: the brackish was beneficial, but the disease, albeit slowly, progressed, and forced her to be increasingly absent from official ceremonies and at the Winter Palace, allowing thus the Tsar to visit His beloved girl who lived with His brother Mikhail, who had married an Italian marquise, Louise, in the meantime.
Their love was still only platonic, then, but that dance was pander as it was the reading of the love of Tristan and Isotta for Paul and Francesca, which became paradigm of our literature regarding the forbidden love.

Having been present at the ball, Princess Louise, Katia's sister-in-law, was well aware of this, fearing that such a relationship could jeopardize the ties that united the Tsar with her husband, who from the Tsar received constant help, and, together with Mikhail, she will keep her away from the emperor even during His frequent visits.
But what's stronger than Love?
Can two lovers be kept one away from the other?

THAT YEAR, AT THE END OF MARCH, SNOW was still falling, and it seemed that winter would never end. The Neva was still frozen over: no cracks in the ice announced an approaching thaw.
In the park a man and a girl were sitting close together on a bench. The man wore a uniform without braid or epaulette, and the sight was so familiar that not one of the passers-by gave them a second glance. Two lovers, they thought; some little shopgirl who goes without lunch rather than break her date, and he, a soldier, escaped from the barracks, taking his ration of kisseswhere he found it.
A clock struck twelve, and still the snowflakes poured down from the white sky. [...]
An hour passed without without any sign that the two figures realized the diligent snowflakes had transformed them into a group of statues. The girl's head still rested on her companion's shoulder and he had his arms around her as if to protect her from the cold.
Who could have guessed that these poor lovers , with nowhere to go and no fire to warm them, were the Emperor Alexander II and the Princess Katharina Mikhailovna Dolgoruki? 1

The two lovers went on meeting themselves and the rumors about their relationship led Princess Louise Mikhailovna to take Katya away from St.Petersburg to take her first to Germany and then to Italy, further away from Russia, to be exactly to Naples, where her relatives still lived. But thick was the correspondence between the young Princess and the Tsar who continued to promise her that after being a widower He would have married her, and it was thanks to their many letters that they found the way to meet in Paris at the Great Exposition of 1867.
Sadly, it was dating at that time the first terroristic attack to the Tsar, who, fortunately, remained completely uninhibited: the State Police strongly advised Hhim against taking such a trip given the risks it could have represent to Him, but for a heart in love it's always worth risking to see after so many months the face of his beloved one and to be able to embrace her.

And it was since then, when she tasted the bitter taste it would have had just to think to lose her Alexander forever, that Katya, who was nineteen years old, decided to donate herself to Him, giving thus start to the their love story; as long as He remained in Paris, she entered through a private entrance the Palace of the Elysée where the Emperor of all Russias stayed, having direct access to His rooms whenever she wanted, but shortly after coming back to Russia, Katya took home at the Winter Palace in St.Petersburg in the private Tsar's apartments as an Empress's lady-in-waiting - this was a pretext to ensure more security to them both since they were still meeting daily exposing themselves to the danger of attacks and at the same time it gave them the opportunity to be closer: they will never get apart ... It was 1878, Katya was thirty-two, their love story was lasting for more than ten years and thousands were the letters that in the meantime they sent one another.

At the death of the Empress occured on June 1880, the Tsar observed only one month of mourning in order to marry her beloved one, nominated for the occasion Princess Yurewskaya, as soon as possible: they had already two children, George and Olga, children he readily acknowledged as legitimate though, since this was a morganatic marriage, no dynastic right could be transferred to them.

Short, however, was their idyll as a married couple and rather tormented for the poor Katya, since there were malicious rumors at Court: she was regarded as a a woman who wanted to take advantage of her position, as the one who wanted to give a more liberal course to state politics when all wanted to maintain absolutism, and a woman of malice, though at last her relationship with the Emperor had become completely lawful; as for the Tsar, he miraculously survived the first attack in Paris but suffered a long series of them after returning home, but unfortunately that of March 13th, 1881 led him to death - a bomb was thrown at his feet but he managed to get back to His palace in time to finally close His eyes in the arms of His Katya!

Just one week later the Constitution He had wrote together with her had to become executive and her beloved spouse was to become crowned Empress (He wanted to celebrate both these events on May 13th, but she had a premonition and preferred to postpone everything of a week, alas !)

Katya and her Tsar with two of their children photographed at the time of their wedding.

She survived her beloved husband forty-four years and, while refusing to continue to spend her life at palace, she travelled between Paris and the French and Ligurian Riviera in very well-timed conditions, given the annuity and the crowd of servants – they were almost twenty - her husband had left her and exactly in Riviera, to be more precise in Nice, she'll expire at the age of seventy-four when her remaining money was just running out ...

This was one of the many " TRUE FAIRY TALES" that I really enjoyed telling you;
I hope you have liked this story so exciting,
rich in passion and surprise moves,
lived in the backstage of the official one
belonging to that of our Old Europe.

Thanking you again with all my heart,
I take my leave of you while
sending you all my warmest embrace,

see you soon 💕

William Shakespeare, Romeo & Juliet

- immagine 1 - Ekaterina Mikhailovna Dolgorukova - Katya - fotografata in giovine età.

a presto 💕

Sometimes the heart cannot be dissuaded and the precious moments together mean so much more when life keeps love apart. I enjoyed reading this story and learning a little bit more about our world's history. Sending you hugs and blessings in this beautiful month of October. xo Karen

  26. Wow sometimes you just can't imagine that people have led the lives that they have, it is like a made up movie or something, I am surprised the long life she had. I always feel sad for the children that aren't recognized as legitimate because of the actions of their parents.

actually this love-story inspired a film, indeed, two films, one in 1938 and the other in 1959, played by Romy Schneider, it is far beautiful for not to be seen on a screen !

As for the childre, they're always the innocent 'victims' of their parents' lives, alas !

Wishing you a wonderful day, today,
      and joy-filled days to come,
with sincere love and gratitude ⊰✽*✽⊱

      mia dolcissima amica ❥
